About two women, Loreta Janeta Velasquez and Sarah Emma Emondson,  who fought in the Civil War,  focusing on their memoirs  and their motives for fighting, as well as examining the importance of and difficulty in differentiating fact and fiction when researching historical records.

Mehetable loves to tell people about the 1600s and her friends in Female Adventurers: the woman who helped colonize Massachusetts and Connecticut. In her hour presentation, Mehetable talks about: how the Puritans dressed, what they found when they arrived, their biggest challenges, how they interacted, the impact of religion on their lives, stories about individual women, and encourages a question and answer dialogue.

In this presentation, Stelzer, by citing specific probate records of some of her research subjects, highlights their value in historical and genealogical research, the challenges of researching women, and some of the conclusions that she drew from this research.

In this presentation, Stelzer paints a picture of life for women in the 17th century by telling some of the stories of the dozen women profiled in her book, how she used probate records to confirm some of her conclusions and the surprises she found along the way, followed by Q&A discussion.


WRITING FAMILY HISTORY WORKSHOP
2 hours - $100 + negotiable travel stipend

Stelzer will take participants through the writing process -- from making preliminary decisions before starting your writing process to setting appropriate goals for the outcome you want.  Along the way, there will be discussion of the creative process, audience, story scope, formats, organization, truthfulness, research, citations, themes, timelines, and points of universality. Participants will participate in writing exercises.



Alice Plouchard Stelzer has been writing for over 25 years as a publisher, magazine and newspaper editor, columnist, journalist, public relations consultant and author. Alice has also been a mentor/coach for writers and has taught writing workshops on journaling, creativity, autobiographical writing, writing for your health and writing family history. Since the publication of her book, Female Adventurers: the women who helped colonize Massachusetts and Connecticut, Stelzer has been lecturing on the challenges faced when researching women and other writing issues.
